How do I adjust the grind setting?
The Philos features a wide adjustment dial that covers all grind settings from espresso to batch brew in a single rotation. Each stepped click corresponds to 6 microns of adjustment, making it easy to dial in and repeat your recipes. You can also convert the grinder to stepless mode for infinite adjustment granularity.
Can I clean the grinder without losing my grind setting?
Yes. The grind setting is controlled by the adjustment ring on the back burr carrier, so it is unaffected by cleaning. Simply remove the magnetic front plate, unscrew the two wing nuts by hand, and pull out the burr carrier to access the grinding chamber. Reinstall everything and your setting is exactly where you left it.
Can the grinder operate without the hopper?
Yes. You can feed beans directly into the grinder without the stainless steel hopper. The opening accepts up to approximately 24 g of coffee with the slide still closable. The hopper also doubles as a convenient funnel for filling the canister while weighing your dose.
What portafilter sizes does the canister fit?
The included canister is designed for 58mm portafilters. An optional canister for 53mm portafilters is available separately.
What is the Dose Finisher and how do I use it?
The Dose Finisher is a cleaning tool that sweeps ground coffee residue from the outlet chute after grinding. With the motor still running, insert it fully into the chute and rotate clockwise and counterclockwise until no more grounds are discharged. When not in use, it stores magnetically in a dedicated slot behind the front plate.
What is the difference between the I200D and I189D burrs?
The I200D burrs produce outstanding flavor clarity with bright, fruity notes and pleasant acidity - best suited to light to medium roasts and all brewing methods. The I189D burrs are based on the iconic Mazzer Mini design and deliver full-bodied, syrupy extractions with low acidity and high body, making them ideal for medium to dark roasts and traditional Italian espresso.
Are the burrs compatible with all brewing methods?
Yes. Both the I200D and I189D burrs are designed for multipurpose use and perform well across all extraction methods, including espresso, moka, filter, and batch brew.
Do I need to season the burrs before use?
No seasoning period is required. Philos burrs have a dedicated surface finishing applied at the factory that makes them stable and ready to use from day one. Discard only the first 50 g of ground coffee before brewing.
Can the Philos be converted to stepless grinding?
Yes. The Philos ships in stepped mode but can be converted to fully stepless operation through a straightforward procedure described in the user manual. No special tools are required.
What safety features does the Philos have?
The Philos includes both electronic and mechanical safety systems. A microswitch beneath the body cuts power to the motor when the hopper is removed. A thermal overload protection also shuts off the motor if it overheats due to jammed burrs or other anomalies.
Is the Philos RDT (Ross Droplet Technique) compatible?
Yes. The burrs and all internal coffee-contact surfaces are made from stainless steel, which is moisture-resistant. The grinder has also been optimized to reduce electrostatic charges during grinding, and Mazzer recommends using the included canister to collect grounds for best results.
What is the Philos made of?
The body is anodized aluminum. Internal components include stainless steel and brass. All parts that contact coffee are certified food-safe.
